番石榴 is the standard mainland term —
番 marks foreign-origin produce (cf.
番茄 tomato,
番薯 sweet potato). In Taiwan and Fujian the common name is
芭乐 bālè (transliterated from a Min Nan reading). Don't confuse with
石榴 shíliu (pomegranate), an unrelated fruit.
