One of China's first four Special Economic Zones (
经济特区) designated in 1980 under Deng Xiaoping's reforms, alongside Shenzhen, Xiamen, and Shantou. Since 2018 connected to Hong Kong and Macau by the 55 km Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, the world's longest sea crossing.
