Founded in Tianjin around 1858 by Gao Guiyou (
高贵友), whose childhood nickname was
狗子 ('Puppy'). He was so busy steaming buns that he had no time to greet customers, so people joked
狗子卖包子,
不理人 — 'Puppy sells buns and ignores everyone.' The nickname stuck and became the brand.
