伯劳 refers to shrikes in general, small predatory passerines nicknamed "butcher birds" in English because they skewer lizards, beetles and small rodents on thorns or barbed wire to cache them for later. Chinese folklore has the expression 劳燕分飞 ("shrike and swallow fly apart") meaning a couple parting ways.
