The Chinese name
灰 ('gray') captures the dusky undersides of these small butterflies, while the English 'gossamer-wings' refers to the iridescent blues and coppers on the upper side. Their myrmecophily — caterpillars fed by ants — is one of the most famous insect symbioses.
