The Western name 'Sirenia' comes from the Greek sirens, since sailors reportedly mistook these slow, surfacing mammals for mermaids — Columbus recorded such a sighting of manatees in 1493. The Chinese name drops the myth and calls them what they look like: 'sea cows'.
