history
Literally 'nebulae outside the (Milky) River'. Historical Chinese astronomy term for what we now call 星系 (xīngxì, galaxies) — they were lumped in with nebulae until Edwin Hubble proved in 1924 that 'spiral nebulae' are separate galaxies. The term still appears in older textbooks.
