In the 1060s the Song prefect 张伯玉 had every household plant banyans. The trees did so well that the city took their name, and Fuzhou's one-character short name is still 榕.
usage
榕城区 is also a district of 揭阳 in eastern Guangdong, so in Guangdong news the name can mean that place instead.
