柴达木 is a phonetic transliteration of the Mongolian Tsaidam ('salt marsh'). Sitting at ~2,800 m on the northern Tibetan Plateau between the Qilian and Kunlun ranges, the basin holds China's largest salt lake (察尔汗盐湖) and significant oil, gas, lithium, and potash reserves.
