As mayor of Shanghai (1987-1991) and later premier, pushed through painful reforms of state-owned enterprises, the banking system, and tax-sharing between central and local governments. Oversaw China's 2001 WTO entry. Famed for blunt, no-nonsense speaking — once vowed, 'I have prepared 100 coffins, 99 for corrupt officials and one for myself.'
