Zhu Xi systematized the Four Books (四书) — 《论语》, 《孟子》, 《大学》, 《中庸》 — as the core Confucian canon. From 1313 until 1905 his commentaries were required reading for the imperial civil service exam (科举), shaping Chinese (and Korean and Japanese) elite thought for six centuries.
