Written/literary register. In speech 几个月 (jǐ ge yuè) 'several months' is much more common; 数月 belongs to news headlines, formal reports, and essays.

mistakes

Here 数 is read shù (fourth tone) meaning 'several', not shǔ 'to count'. Same 数 you see in 数百 (shùbǎi) 'hundreds' and 数千 (shùqiān) 'thousands'.
