Winter palace of the Dalai Lamas, built on Red Hill (Marpo Ri) in Lhasa. The Chinese name is a phonetic transcription of Tibetan 'Potala', itself from Sanskrit 'Potalaka', the mythical Mount Potalaka of Avalokiteśvara — the bodhisattva the Dalai Lamas are considered to embody. UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994.
