Tips

history
The traditional units (市尺, 市斤, 市升) were fixed in 1929 as simple ratios of metric ones: a 市尺 is a third of a metre and a 市斤 500 grams. Since 1959 a 斤 has 10 两 instead of 16. Metric units became the legal standard in 1984, but markets still price food by the 斤.
