氏 (shì, 'clan / family lineage / surname') tags
崔 ('Cuī') as a clan name. The
博陵崔氏 (Bólíng Cuī shì) and
清河崔氏 (Qīnghé Cuī shì) were two of the 'Five Surnames Seven Clans' (
五姓七族) — the most prestigious aristocratic families of the Tang dynasty, so prestigious that even emperors struggled to marry into them. In classical fiction (e.g. 《
莺莺传》, source of
西厢记),
崔氏 also names individual Cui-family women.
