Named for the land south of the
五岭 (Five Ranges) that separate Guangdong and Guangxi from central China. The Qin dynasty first pushed military colonies across these ranges in 214 BCE, but the region kept its own identity, today associated with
粤菜 (Cantonese cuisine), the
岭南画派 (Lingnan painting school), and Cantonese opera (
粤剧).
