For more than a thousand years 婺源 belonged to 徽州, in today's Anhui, and only passed to Jiangxi in the 20th century, which is why its villages have white walls and black-tiled roofs in the Huizhou style. It is also the ancestral home of the philosopher 朱熹.

The county lies at the source (源) of the 婺 River. The character 婺 is met almost only in place names: here, and in 婺州, the old name of Jinhua in Zhejiang.
