Auschwitz-Birkenau, in Polish Oświęcim, is where Nazi Germany murdered roughly 1.1 million people, mostly Jewish, between 1940 and 1945. Liberated by the Soviets on 27 January 1945 - a date now commemorated as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage memorial.
