Tips

history
Serialized from 1963 to 1966, the novel follows three sworn brothers: 乔峰, a hero who learns he was born a Khitan, the prince 段誉 and the monk 虚竹. Jin Yong borrowed the Buddhist term as a symbol for his characters, who have great powers yet cannot escape suffering. The 2003 TV series with 胡军 as Qiao Feng is the best-loved version.
culture
In Buddhism the eight classes protect the Dharma. The 天 (devas) and 龙 (nagas) head the list, hence the name; the others include the 夜叉 (yakshas) and 阿修罗 (asuras).
