In classical Chinese
江 by itself meant the Yangtze (and
河 meant the Yellow River).
大江 therefore almost always refers poetically to the Yangtze — as in Su Shi's 《
念奴娇·
赤壁怀古》opening line
大江东去 ('The great river flows east'), one of the most quoted lines in Song poetry.
