Originally Buddhist - the four Lokapala guardians of the cardinal directions. Since 1992 the term most commonly refers to Hong Kong's 四大天王: 张学友刘德华黎明郭富城. The label was coined by a Hong Kong paper and defined Cantopop for a decade.
