Chinese counts in
万 (10,000) units, not thousands — so 400,000 is read as "40 ×
万" =
四十万, not "
四百千." Train your brain to chunk large numbers into
万 (4 zeros) and
亿 (8 zeros):
一百万 = 1,000,000,
一亿 = 100,000,000. This is the single biggest mental switch from English number reading.
