炎 (yán, inflammation) is the universal medical suffix for '-itis' in Chinese:
鼻炎 rhinitis,
胃炎 gastritis,
肝炎 hepatitis,
关节炎 arthritis. The character is two
火 (fires) stacked — 'where it's burning'. So
喉炎 = throat-on-fire, exactly like the Greek-derived 'laryngitis'.
