Tips

usage
周易 and 易经 name the same classic and are often used interchangeably, or shortened to 易. Strictly, 易经 is the core text of 64 hexagrams, while 周易 also takes in the ten early commentaries, the 易传. Lines are cited by hexagram: 《周易·乾》 is the first hexagram, Heaven.
history
The 周 in the name is usually taken as the Zhou dynasty, so the title means 'the Changes of Zhou': the core text took shape under the Western Zhou, and the commentaries were added over the following centuries.
