In the 1990s poachers shot thousands of Tibetan antelope here for their wool. The local patrol leader 杰桑·索南达杰 was killed by poachers in 1994, and the patrols that followed made Hoh Xil a symbol of conservation. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017.
