北风 is the harsh wind of winter, often paired with snow and hardship. The Aesop fable The North Wind and the Sun is known in Chinese as
北风与太阳 (Běifēng yǔ Tàiyáng).
北风 also names a poem in the
诗经 (Shījīng, Book of Songs), where it symbolizes political oppression.
