Tips

mistakes
Easily confused with (to stab/thorn). Note the different left-side component: has on the left, while has on the left.
usage
The "to slash" sense is read lá, and mainland writing normally uses for it today, with the older form, still standard in Taiwan. The "perverse, unreasonable" sense is a separate literary reading, là, alive only in bound compounds such as 乖剌 and 剌谬, never as a bare predicate.

Components

radical
dāo
knife (right-side form)
is the right-side form of (knife) and the indexing radical. It contributes the cutting action - means to slash, slit or rip with a sharp stroke. The radical groups it with (stab), (slice), (mark out) and (scrape).
phonetic
shù
bundle; bind
(shù) supplies the phonetic skeleton, drifted heavily to lá. A faint semantic echo lingers - a is a quick rip or cutting stroke, the kind that slices through a bundled-up stalk. Same phonetic also feeds (spicy), (rely), (poke) for similar sharp-action characters.
