Tips

history
An entering-tone syllable was short and ended in -p, -t or -k. Mandarin lost the endings and spread these syllables over its four tones, so 十 "ten" is now second tone, though Cantonese still says sap⁶. This is why some old rhymes no longer work in Mandarin.
usage
In classical verse it is one of the three 仄 "oblique" tones, with 上声 and 去声, set against the level 平声.
