The Dai are closely related to the Thai and Lao peoples. Their most famous tradition is the Water Splashing Festival (泼水节), celebrated during the Dai New Year in April.
Standing-person radical on the left - the side-form of 人. Indexes 傣 in the people family alongside 们, 你, 他, signalling the character names a category of human beings. Used to write the name of the Dai ethnic group of Yunnan and Southeast Asia.
Right side 泰 gives the sound, drifting from tài to dǎi with a tone shift. 泰 also carries the cultural link to 泰国 (Thailand) - the Dai are linguistic cousins of the Thai, so the phonetic doubles as a quiet hint about the broader Tai-Kadai family.
