Bo Le (
伯乐), whose real name was Sun Yang (
孙阳), was a Qin-era expert at judging horses. The Tang writer Han Yu (
韩愈) summed it up: '
世有伯乐,
然后有千里马' — only when there is a Bo Le are there thousand-li horses, because without a judge of talent, the talent goes unrecognized.
