Bo Le (伯乐), whose real name was Sun Yang (), was a Qin-era expert at judging horses. The Tang writer Han Yu (韩愈) summed it up: '伯乐然后' — only when there is a Bo Le are there thousand-li horses, because without a judge of talent, the talent goes unrecognized.
