history

Known in Uyghur, Kazakh, and Russian as Gulja (Кульджа). It was the capital of the Soviet-backed Second East Turkestan Republic (1944-1949) and remains a major Han-Uyghur-Kazakh trading city near the Khorgos border crossing.
