Legend says the boy emperor Song Bing (宋帝昺) counted eight peaks here and named the place 'Eight Dragons', but his attendant added that the emperor himself was the ninth dragon — so the area became 九龙 'Nine Dragons'.

Until its 1993 demolition, 九龙 was home to the 九龙城寨 (Kowloon Walled City) — a lawless 1.4-hectare ungoverned enclave of 33,000 residents that became iconic in cyberpunk and gangster cinema.
