The Qiao family, Shanxi merchants (
晋商), began it in 1756, and under
乔致庸 in the 19th century it grew to six large courtyards with over 300 rooms. A 2006 TV drama about him, Qiao's Grand Courtyard, took the house's name and made it famous across China.
