中科院 Zhōngkēyuàn for short) is China's flagship scientific research institution — over 100 research institutes, the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC,
中国科大), and the prestigious
院士 academician title. Distinct from the Chinese Academy of Engineering (
中国工程院, founded 1994) which focuses on applied engineering.
