In TCM nomenclature,
上清 means 'clearing the upper [body]' (head, eyes, throat) and
饮 is a class of liquid herbal decoction. Several historic formulas share the name
上清饮; the term is also recycled in modern proprietary medicines and 'cooling' herbal drinks (closely related to the well-known pill
上清丸).
