In 260 BCE, Qin general Bai Qi (白起) crushed the Zhao army here at 长平 (modern 高平). Ancient sources say 400,000 surrendered Zhao troops were buried alive — a mass-grave excavation at 高平永录 in 1995 confirmed large-scale skeletal remains, lending physical evidence to the chronicle.
