Tips

usage
飠 is the traditional-script counterpart to simplified 饣 - same job (food, eating, hunger), same position, far more strokes. Used across Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau publishing. If you read across both scripts, recognize that every 饣-character has a 飠-twin: 饭/飯, 饺/餃, 馆/館. Never written alone.
history
飠 is the calligraphic compression of 食, originally a pictograph of a lidded grain vessel. In left-position the body narrowed vertically while preserving the eight-stroke lid-vessel-base structure, so the radical could share horizontal space with a phonetic on the right. The 1956 mainland reform later reduced this to 饣.
usage
Food/eating cue in Traditional script: 飯 (rice/meal), 餓 (hungry), 飽 (full), 餃 (dumpling), 餅 (flatbread), 館 (hall/restaurant), 飲 (drink), 餐 (meal).

Radical

Food Kangxi #184

One of the most productive food-and-eating radicals. Built on a covered grain vessel, 食 indexes everything to do with meals, hunger, fullness, and the kitchen, but it almost always appears in its left-position variants 饣 (simplified) or 飠 (traditional): 饭, 饺, 饿, 饱, 馆, 饮. Free-standing 食 is more literary.
