Rebuilt by Empress Dowager Cixi in 1888 on the site of the earlier
清漪园 (burned by Anglo-French forces in 1860). Famously financed by diverting funds earmarked for the Qing navy — a decision often blamed for China's defeat in the 1894 Sino-Japanese War. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998.
