In imperial China, 门下 referred to retainers, guests, or advisors in the household of a nobleman. The term 门下省 (Ménxià Shěng) was one of the Three Chancelleries of the Tang dynasty. In modern usage it refers to a teacher-student or master-apprentice relationship.
