Silver was the de facto currency of late imperial China (Ming and Qing). Much of the silver came from Spanish American mines like Potosí (
波托西), shipped to China via the Manila galleons in exchange for tea, silk and porcelain. The expression
银本位 (yín běnwèi) means 'silver standard'.
