Literally 'return to ancestor'. 返 (fǎn, return) + 祖 (zǔ, ancestor) = the offspring 'returns' biologically to a long-lost ancestral form. Almost always seen as 返祖现象 (fǎnzǔ xiànxiàng, atavistic phenomenon).
