Originally a military term —
轻骑 was lightly armored cavalry used for fast raids and reconnaissance, opposite of
重骑 (heavy cavalry). The modern moped meaning came from the Chinese motorcycle brand
济南轻骑 (Jinan Qingqi), which made the term a household name in the 80s and 90s.
