软盘 ('soft disk') was named in contrast to
硬盘 (yìngpán, 'hard disk'): the 3.5-inch diskette had a flexible internal magnetic platter under its plastic shell. The save icon in most software (the little floppy) is one of the few traces left of this once-ubiquitous medium.
