Tips

culture
Beyond the children's game, 躲猫猫 became internet slang in 2009 after the 'Yunnan hide-and-seek incident' (云南躲猫猫事件), in which authorities claimed a detainee died while playing hide-and-seek with cellmates. The term is now used cynically to mean 'to give an obviously absurd cover story'.
memory
Literally 'hide cat-cat' — the doubled mimics how a child describes a kitten ducking behind something. Compare 老老实实 (lǎolǎoshíshí) where doubling adds a soft, cute, casual tone.
