Mainland Chinese ID numbers (居民身份证号) are 18 digits - first 6 encode birthplace, next 8 are date of birth, then a 3-digit sequence (odd = male, even = female), and a final checksum digit. Required for nearly every formal interaction: trains, hotels, bank accounts, real-name registration online.
