The Who never toured mainland China. They were among the first rock bands to systematically smash instruments on stage — the stage moves of frontman Roger Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend (scissor-windmill strums) have been widely imitated. They were also pioneers of the rock-opera form (《Tommy》 1969, 《Quadrophenia》 1973).
