Dried pasta of durum wheat shaped like a butterfly or bow tie: small rectangles of dough, ruffled along two edges and pinched in the middle. It is boiled and served with sauce like other pasta.
Literal translation of Italian 'farfalle' (butterflies). Sometimes also used for Chinese-style bow-tie dough snacks made from wheat flour and deep-fried, but in modern menus it almost always means the Italian pasta.
