Cousin of 贾宝玉 in the novel 红楼梦: a calm, sensible girl whose golden locket matches his jade, and whom the family marries him to instead of 林黛玉, the girl he loves.
Her match with Baoyu is called 金玉良缘, 'the gold-and-jade union'. The riddle-poem that foretells her fate ends 金簪雪里埋, 'a gold hairpin buried in snow': the hairpin is her, and 雪 'snow' puns on her surname 薛.
memory
宝钗 = "precious hairpin". Where Daiyu is 黛 (eyebrow pigment - emotion inked on the face), Baochai is 钗 (a solid ornament - polished, ornamental propriety).
