Tips

history
Foot-binding spread among elite families from the Song dynasty and later through most of society. Tiny bound feet, 小脚, were seen as beautiful and as a sign of a good family. Reformers campaigned against it from the 1890s, and the new Republic banned it in 1912, though it lingered in villages for decades.
